Ali Oghazian was a photojournalist at one of the government-owned newspapers in the capital of Iran, Tehran. When the protests after the disputed presidential election in June 2009 escalated, he went out on the streets to document the events. Shortly thereafter Oghazian was forced to flee the country and seek asylum in Sweden. Today, roughly one year after the start of the protests, he wants to share his pictures.

“The pictures do no good on my hard-drive. To show them to the rest of the world is my obligation to those who have sacrificed their lives in the struggle for a free and democratic Iran”

Arranging the exhibition is the network Green Democracy in cooperation with the newspaper ETC. Green Democracy is a nonprofit organization that since the election has arranged a large amount of demonstrations and manifestations in support of the struggle in Iran. Ali Oghazian will be present to discuss his work and answer questions.

Opening: 21/6 at 17 - 20
Exhibition also open: 22/6 at 12 - 17

Letter to the Swedish Minister for Foreign Affairs

Mr. Minister for Foreign Affairs,

The reason we are writing this letter to you is the recent executions in Iran that you are most certainly already aware of. Early Sunday morning the 9th of May five human-rights activists where executed, under false accusations of them threatening national security. In an unfair trial, behind closed doors, these five were sentenced to death.

Four of them were from the Kurdish province in Iran.

  • Farzad Kamangar, 35 years of age
  • Ali Heidarian, 31 years of age
  • Farhad Vakili
  • Shirin Alam Holi, 29 years of age
  • Mehdi Eslamian, 30 years of age

We Swedish-Iranians are deeply disturbed about the turn of events in Iran. We are afraid that a lot more political prisoners will be executed in the near future as part of the political strategy of the Iranian regime. A strategy that includes scaring its citizens and eliminating all political opposition.

Therefore we want the Ministry for Foreign Affairs to call the Iranian ambassador for questioning and demand an explanation for these executions. We want the Minister for Foreign affairs to explain to the Iranian ambassador that Sweden has a responsibility to “work for freedom, peace and reconciliation in the world around us”, values that can only be maintained by us distancing ourselves from these crimes against human rights.

This request is written to you by us Swedish-Iranians who work for a free Iran.

Find out yourself

The 16:th of March 2010 Green Democracy held a manifestation to honour the memory of all who have died, all who have been wounded and all who have been arrested during the protests in Iran.

The manifestation was not only a memento, but also an encouragement. An encouragement to us all to learn more, inform ourselves and enlighten ourselves.

Thank You

Green Democracy wants to thank everyone that attended the seminar Dawn of Hope the 12th of February 2010.

We would also like to thank our speakers.

  • Dr. Ahmad Alavi, economic researchers
  • Reza Heydari, resigned diplomat
  • Dr. Hossein Ladjevardi, sociologist and chairman of “Association of Iranian researchers”

Dawn of Hope - Seminar with international speakers
12th of February 2010 17.30-21.00 at ABF-huset Z-salen, Sveavägen 41, Stockholm.
They say that the night is darkest just before dawn. The Iranian regime is growing more and more desperate in their attempts to stay in power and are using oppression as their only tool to silence the uprisings. They don’t understand that the Iranian people, inside the country and in the rest of the world, have made their decision and are not going to give up! Increased oppression only leads to increased motivation for an opposition that has taken the world by storm. We know that the sun will soon rise.
The “Green Movement” is the sum of individual intentions and goals where everyone is their own journalist and their own leader. The movement doesn’t need a leader showing the way, instead everyone is taking their own decisions. By educating ourselves we can make better choices. Thus the reason for this seminar, a seminar that will hopefully lead to reflection.
Three speakers will be discussing three interesting issues during the seminar.
Dr. Ahmad Alavi, economic researcher will be analyzing the fundamental causes for the current protests, as seen from an economic perspective.
Reza Heydari, resigned diplomat from the Iranian embassy in Norway will describe the effects that Iranians actions all over the world have on the Iranian regime and on diplomats and embassy-staff.
Dr. Hossein Ladjevardi, sociologist and chairman of the Paris-based organization “Association of Iranian researchers” will compare the demands and goals of the mashrooteh movement during the Iranian Constitutional Revolution in the beginning of the 20th century with the demands and goals of the reformists in the current opposition.
During the breaks we will listen to traditional piano and santour music.
The seminar will conclude with a panel debate and a Q&A.
The seminar will be held in Persian.

Remember, remember the 7th of December

Remember remember the 7th of December, the gunpowder treason and plot. There is no reason why the gunpowder treason should ever be forgot.

The 7th of December (16th of Azar) is the Students Day in Iran. The Student Day is the anniversary of the killing of three students from the University of Tehran on December 6, 1953. Since then students have been protesting against dictatorship every year and on the 7th of December this year the Iranian student movement will be accompanied by the rest of the people in massive protests against the repressive and illegitimate Iranian regime. Government forces have already arrested many students in advance in order to prevent them from organizing protests.

Help us spread awareness about this day and to show your support for the brave students and their actions.

  1. Wear something green on this day and encourage two others to do the same.
  2. If you are a student please host an event on your university and post the link to this page.
  3. Broadcast yourself. Make a short video of yourself where you declare your support and invite others to join. Post the video on video on the video tab of this Facebook Group.

If you don’t know what to say in your video, here is a suggestion:

The 7th of December is Students Day in Iran. On this day the students will once again take to the streets in peaceful protest for freedom and democracy and against oppression. They need our support. I will show my support by wearing green. Wear green as well.
